Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

What is wrong

On a small number of vehicles, a body panel behind the right tail light housing may not have been sealed properly. As a result, water could leak into the trunk and cause the park distance control and electronic power steering not to work. Additionally, over time, wiring in the trunk could become damaged and cause a short circuit or electrical arcing (sparks). Note: This problem would cause a warning to display in the instrument cluster.

Why it matters

A loss of power steering assist can cause a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low speeds, and increase the risk of a crash. A short circuit or electrical arcing can create the risk of a fire or injury.

What the dealer will do

None of the affected vehicles have been delivered to customers. BMW will instruct dealers to inspect and, if necessary, apply seam sealer to the body panel before each vehicle is delivered.

What is wrong

On a small number of vehicles, a problem with the rear lamps could cause the taillamps, stop lamps and/or rear turn signals not to work. Note: This problem would cause a warning message to display.

Why it matters

Stop lamps, and/or turn signals that don't work could cause a person not to recognize that a vehicle ahead is braking or intends to turn or change lanes. Taillamps that don't work could make the vehicle less visible to others. These issues could increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the affected rear lamps.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the rear outboard seat belt(s) may have been damaged during production. As a result, the seat belt(s) may not hold a person in place during a crash. Additionally, the seat belt(s) may not properly lock to secure a child seat. Note: The vehicle's lower universal anchorage system (UAS) is not affected by this defect and may still be used to secure a child seat.

Why it matters

A seat belt that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

What the dealer will do

To reduce the safety risk, the company advises that you shouldn't transport passengers in the rear outboard seats until the recall repairs are completed. The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the left and/or right rear seat belt(s), as necessary.
