What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the side curtain airbag inflator(s) could rupture and separate unexpectedly. As a result, a piece of metal from the inflator could be propelled toward vehicle occupants with or without the airbag(s) deploying. This could also cause the side curtain airbag(s) not to inflate properly in a crash. Note: This is an expansion of Transport Canada recall no. 2024-241.

Why it matters

An airbag inflator that ruptures can create a risk of injury. Additionally, an airbag that doesn't inflate properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system could leak on the intake air hose. As a result, the fluid could enter the electrical connector for the water pump and cause a short circuit.

Why it matters

A short circuit can create the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.

What the dealer will do

To reduce the safety risk, BMW advises you to park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs are completed. BMW will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the water pump and electrical connector. The dealer will also install a shield on the connector.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler could crack internally and leak. If this happens, you may notice the following symptoms: a warning symbol in the instrument cluster displaying a loss of coolant, reduced engine power, an unpleasant exhaust odour, an unusual noise from the engine and/or smoke from the engine compartment. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada Recall no. 2018-587.

Why it matters

A cracked EGR cooler could create the risk of an engine fire.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the EGR cooler. The dealer will also inspect the intake manifold, and replace it, if necessary.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles equipped with a diesel engine, the high-pressure fuel pump may wear prematurely. This can cause reduced engine performance and could lead to a sudden engine stall. Note: A warning lamp on the instrument cluster will turn on if the fuel pressure drops.

A loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the bolts that attach the electric power steering assist motor to the steering gear may corrode and break. This could cause a loss of power steering assist.

Why it matters

A loss of power steering assist may result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the bolts and apply a wax sealer. If one or more of the bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed.

What is wrong

On certain 328d xDrive models, engine vibrations could damage the rear driveshaft joint. Over time, this could cause the driveshaft to separate, which would result in a loss of power to the rear wheels. If the driveshaft separates, the vehicle could also move when the transmission is in Park, and the parking brake is not used.

Why it matters

A loss of power to the rear wheels could increase the risk of a crash. A parked vehicle that rolls away could also increase the risk of an injury or a crash.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rear driveshaft constant-velocity joint. Dealers will also inspect the transfer case, and if necessary, replace it. Note: BMW recommends that you should use the parking brake, at all times, when you park the vehicle. This will minimize the risk of the vehicle rolling away.

What is wrong

Certain vehicles may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. The front side markers may be inoperative due to a vehicle software update. This could result in the front side marker lamps not illuminating in conjunction with the parking lamps or headlamps, and no warning message would be displayed in the instrument cluster. The turn signal function of the front side marker lamps would remain operational. This could cause the vehicle to fail to comply with the requirements of the standard, and reduce vehicle conspicuity, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What is wrong

Certain vehicles, which were parked at the port of entry in Halifax during the ice storms in February 2015, may have been exposed to excessive standing water and salt for an extended period due to this isolated environmental incident. Certain MINI models could have corrosion at the starter motor power supply cable connectors, which could lead to the inability to restart the engine following an engine shutdown by the start-stop (MSA) system, increasing the risk of crash causing injury in a traffic situation. On certain BMW models, the lubrication of some internal components within the steering rack may have been exposed to excessive water or salt which could result in higher than normal steering effort or steering binding, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. In addition, electrical wires and/or connectors in all affected vehicles may have been exposed to water or salt, which could lead to increased electrical system resistance, and increase the risk of fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Owners should contact their selling Retailer regarding this recall. Affected vehicles will be inspected. Some vehicles will be taken out of service immediately and owners will be provided with temporary transportation until a new replacement vehicle is available. All other vehicles are cleared of this safety concern and may continue to be driven until a new replacement vehicle is available. Due to potential concerns about long term vehicle quality, all affected vehicles will ultimately be removed from service.

What is wrong

This recall was replaced by Transport Canada Recall No. 2021-711. On certain vehicles, the cooler for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module may develop an internal leak and coolant could mix with diesel engine soot/sediment. In rare circumstances, this condition could result in smouldering particles and lead to the melting of the intake manifold, increasing the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will inspect the EGR cooler, and if necessary, replace it. If it is determined that the EGR cooler has leaked internally, the intake manifold will also be replaced. The EGR pipe connecting the cooler to the manifold will be cleaned. Note: An operator may be alerted to this condition by one or more of the following symptoms: A warning symbol in the instrument cluster displaying a loss of engine coolant, a reduction in engine power, an unpleasant odour (exhaust gas), an unusual noise from the engine compartment, and/or smoke from the engine compartment.
