Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

18 January 2023

Transport Canada lists: R1250 RT 2019–2023

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, a sudden difference in speed between the engine and rear wheel could damage the gearbox input shaft or cause it to break. If this happens, the rear wheel could lock up while riding. Note: This type of sudden change in rear wheel speed is uncommon, but may happen in an off-road situation where a spinning rear wheel slows suddenly while landing after a jump.

Why it matters

A rear wheel that locks suddenly could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

BMW Motorrad will notify owners by mail and instruct you to bring your motorcycle to a dealership to update the engine management software.

Transport Canada recall 2020570

24 November 2020

Transport Canada lists: R1250 RT 2019–2021 · S1000rr 2019–2021 · S1000xr 2019–2021

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, the front brake calipers may leak a small amount of brake fluid when parked. Over a long time, this could empty the fluid reservoir. If this happens, the motorcycle will have reduced brake performance. This problem may result in brake fluid on the front tire or wheel, and on the ground after the motorcycle has been parked for an extended period. The owner's manual has information for how to check the brake fluid level before riding. Note: This recall replaces BMW recall 34 003 20 (008) (Transport Canada recall 2020-377). Motorcycles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair.

Why it matters

Reduced front brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your motorcycle to a dealer to inspect the front brakes. The calipers will be replaced, if necessary.

Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
