Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

Transport Canada recall 2021410 · manufacturer campaign N202324251

1 July 2021

Transport Canada lists: Silverado HD 2015–2016 · Sierra HD 2015–2016

What is wrong

On certain trucks, the side curtain airbag inflators could be defective. As a result, the driver and/or passenger side curtain airbag inflator(s) could fail. If this happens, the end cap from the inflator or other parts could be propelled into the vehicle and strike a person. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada Recall No. 2020-576.

Why it matters

A metal end cap or other parts that strike a person could create a risk of injury.

What the dealer will do

General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to replace both side curtain airbags.

Transport Canada recall 2019055 · manufacturer campaign N182204190

8 February 2019

Transport Canada lists: Silverado HD 2016–2018 · Sierra HD 2016–2018

What is wrong

On certain 3500 series trucks, the level sensor in the front fuel tank may malfunction. In rare cases, the front fuel tank may over-fill and expand, causing it to contact the driveshaft. Operators may hear a grinding or knocking noise if this happens. This could create a hole in the tank and cause a fuel leak. Note: This problem only affects cab and chassis models equipped with a gasoline engine and dual fuel tanks.

Why it matters

Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, creates the risk of a fire.

What the dealer will do

The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the rear-tank fuel-pump module replaced. Dealers will also inspect the front tank and replace if necessary.

Transport Canada recall 2018464 · manufacturer campaign 18278

31 August 2018

Transport Canada lists: Silverado HD 2015–2016 · Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle 2015–2016 · Sierra HD 2015–2016

What is wrong

Certain Heavy Duty and Police/Special Service vehicles may not have been repaired properly under Recall 2016-053 (GM #20760). The brake pedal pivot nut may become loose, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative. If this happens, a driver may be unable to safely stop the vehicle or the brake pedal may interfere with the accelerator pedal. Both of these situations could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will add adhesive to the pivot nut and will reinstall it at an increased torque. Note: This condition may result in the "Service Engine Soon" light illuminating, and brake lights may stay on longer than expected.

4 February 2016

Transport Canada lists: Silverado LD Special Services 2015–2016 · Tahoe Special Services 2015–2016 · Sierra HD 2015–2016

What is wrong

On certain Heavy Duty and Police Pursuit vehicles, the brake pedal pivot nut may become loose, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative. If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, and/or the driver may be unable to safely stop the vehicle through application of the brake pedal, potentially affecting stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will inspect the pivot bolt installation to determine whether the vehicle has already received the production remedy. If not, the dealer will add adhesive to the nut, and reinstall the nut at an increased torque. Note: This condition may result in the "Service Engine Soon" light illuminating, and brake lights may stay on longer than expected.

Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
