Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

Seats And Restraints

Transport Canada recall 2014343 · manufacturer campaign 14171

11 August 2014

Transport Canada lists: Encore 2013 · ATS 2013 · Trax 2013

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the front outboard driver and passenger seatbelt pretensioners may not function as designed in the event of a crash. The pretensioners could retract upon deployment but fail to lock in the retracted position, allowing the seat belt to return to the original position. This could increase the risk of injury in a crash that warrants seatbelt pretensioner deployment.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will replace affected pretensioners.

29 July 2014

Transport Canada lists: Encore 2013–2014 · ATS 2013–2014 · CTS 2014 · Silverado 2014 · and 2 more

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the hook bracket assembly for either front seat may have been manufactured with an incomplete weld. If the weld is incomplete and the assembly is exposed to a high load condition, the hook may separate from the seat track. This could increase the risk of occupant injury during a crash.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will inspect the weld, and if necessary, replace the lower seat track.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, insulation on the engine block heater power cord may become damaged if the cord is handled during very cold days (temperatures below -25C). This could create an electrical shock hazard, which could result in personal injury.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will replace the block heater cord.

Airbag

Transport Canada recall 2014214 · manufacturer campaign 14211

6 June 2014

Transport Canada lists: Encore 2013 · Spark 2013

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, welds on the passenger airbag end caps could separate from the airbag inflator. If this occurs, the airbag may not deploy properly. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the passenger airbag assembly.

Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
