Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

29 July 2021

Transport Canada lists: Ascent 2019 · BRZ 2018–2019 · Forester 2018 · Impreza WRX 2018–2019 · and 2 more

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, then engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving.

Why it matters

A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump.

31 December 2018

Transport Canada lists: BRZ 2018 · Legacy 2018 · Outback 2018

What is wrong

Certain vehicles equipped with a built-in navigation system may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS 111) - Mirrors and Rear Visibility Systems. A software issue could prevent the centre display screen from turning on properly when the vehicle is started. If this occurs, the rearview image may not be displayed when the vehicle is put in reverse, which could reduce a driver’s rear visibility.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will reprogram the head unit software.

Transport Canada recall 2018607 · manufacturer campaign WTW-82

2 November 2018

Transport Canada lists: Legacy 2018 · Outback 2018

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the low fuel warning light may not turn on at the correct time to warn of a low fuel level. The driving range indicator in the multi-information display may also indicate a remaining distance-to-empty when the fuel tank is empty. While the low fuel warning light will eventually turn on and the fuel gauge will eventually display “E” (empty), if the driver continues to operate the vehicle based on the range indicator, the vehicle may run out of fuel, causing the engine to stall and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will reprogram the combination meter (gauge cluster) software. Note: Until the recall repair is completed, drivers should ensure to refill the fuel tank before the fuel level is close to empty.

Source: Transport Canada — Vehicle Recalls Database; NRCan — Fuel consumption ratings. Data current as of 6 August 2026. Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
