Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

Powertrain

Transport Canada recall 2018369

9 July 2018

Transport Canada lists: G Class 2017

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the reverse gear speed limiter may not meet design specifications and could allow the vehicle to travel at more than 25 km/h in reverse. If a driver were to steer abruptly while travelling above this speed, the vehicle could become unstable and a vehicle rollover may occur, creating a risk of injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will update the engine control unit software to limit the speed while travelling in reverse.

Brakes

Transport Canada recall 2017646

19 December 2017

Transport Canada lists: G Class 2017

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the vacuum hose for the brake booster may not have been manufactured to specification which could cause the interior wall of the hose to delaminate. If this occurs, the vacuum supply of the brake booster may be constrained which could lead to increased braking effort by the driver, resulting in longer stopping distances which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will inspect and replace the vacuum hose as necessary.

Transport Canada recall 2017554

15 November 2017

Transport Canada lists: G Class 2016–2017

What is wrong

On certain vehicles equipped with the Distronic Plus radar brake assist, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) software may malfunction. This could result in increased brake force application being required, which could increase stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will update the ESP control unit with new software.

Source: Transport Canada — Vehicle Recalls Database; NRCan — Fuel consumption ratings. Data current as of 6 August 2026. Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
